The case for using duolingo as part of the language classroom experience

The case for using duolingo as part of the language classroom experience

Pilar Munday

Abstract

This article explores the idea of using an already existing language learning app, Duolingo, to complement traditional college level Spanish as second language courses. These types of apps use adaptive learning technologies, which are able to tailor the tasks to the level of each student. In the case of this study, Duolingo was used as part of the program of studies in two Spanish university courses, one a beginner’s Spanish course (level A1) and the other an advanced intermediate course (B2). The students used the app online, either in its mobile version or in their web browser. I will describe how Duolingo operates, what kind of activities can be done, and how learning is achieved. Preliminary results suggest that Duolingo is an easy-to-use app that is useful and has potential, although its main lessons are not based on communicative competence. It is usually enjoyed by students because of several elements, such as the accessibility on a mobile device, its gamification aspect, and the variety of tasks. I will discuss possible ways to incorporate Duolingo into foreign language courses, always considering it as a complement to the curriculum, but considering its value to reinforce vocabulary and grammar acquisition through spaced repetition, interleaving of different skills and variety of activities.

Visp design and evaluation, a mobile application to practise oral competence

Visp design and evaluation, a mobile application to practise oral competence

Ana Ibáñez Moreno, María Jordano de la Torre, Anna Vermeulen

Abstract

In this paper a new mobile application (app), called VISP (Videos for Speaking), is introduced. This app is easily accessible and manageable and it is aimed at helping students of English as a foreign language to improve their idiomaticity (lexicon, phraseological competence, syntax) in their oral production. In order to do so, the user is invited to make the audio description (AD) of a clip, as part of an authentic communicative task framed within the task-based learning method. After a brief overview of what has been done in the field of mobile assisted language learning (MALL) and a description of the basic principles of AD, this paper gives an account of the process followed to create and launch VISP until arriving to the conception of its second version, VISP 2.0. This was accomplished by means of carrying out several empirical tests to evaluate the app and the learning outcomes that it contributes to achieve. The data obtained up until now allow for the proposal of a theoretical-pedagogical framework that can be applied to a MALL app that is to be used in the context of distance education, thanks to the assessment of the methodological steps that have been taken on the making process of VISP 2.0.

Learning to make effective english presentations with businessapp

Learning to make effective english presentations with businessapp

Antonio Pareja Lora, Cristina Calle Martínez, Lourdes Pomposo Yanes

Abstract

Business, products and/or services presentations in English are increasingly common in the globalization era. However, precisely those who are in dire need to learn how to perform them (executives and professionals in the business world, in general), are the group who lack sufficient time for the learning of this competency, especially in classroom-based teaching environments. Considering a possible solution for this problem, the authors of this work formulated the following hypothesis: would it be possible to build some computer system that can allow this group to learn autonomously and ubiquitously the knowledge needed to make effective presentations in English? To confirm or refute this hypothesis, the authors of this paper have built BusinessApp. BusinessApp is a mobile application (1) designed to help users create and perform effective professional and/or business presentations, and (2) developed on a solid pedagogical and linguistic basis. Its development has pursued a natural and interactive use, as well as including self-assessment activities which can be automatically corrected. All this, a priori, should enable not only distance, blended and ubiquitous learning, but also autonomous learning of its contents. This article presents some important details of construction of BusinessApp, such as the methodology applied in its development, and describes the methodology followed and the results obtained in a first assessment of this mobile app. This first assessment aimed at finding out its actual power to autonomously learn the theoretical contents associated to the creation and implementation of effective professional and/or business oral presentations in English. It also shows that the results obtained in this assessment confirm the research hypothesis stated, i.e., that learning autonomously the contents mentioned using a mobile app is possible.

Mobile assisted language learning in distance and blended education

Mobile assisted language learning in distance and blended education

María Jordano de la Torre, María Dolores Castrillo de Larreta-Azelain, Antonio Pareja-Lora

Abstract

Since the first special issue on Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) was published (Shield & Kukulska-Hulme, 2008), language learning by means of e.g. smartphones and tablets has undergone many changes. In fact, mobile devices have become one of the best allies of students in (language) learning so far, since they help them study anytime and anywhere.
This special issue of RIED reports on the most recent advances of MALL, exemplified by the evolution of some results concerning this area and presented in the last three years in (1) the last meetings of the EuroCALL Special Interest Group on MALL; and (2) in the EuroCALL (plenary) meetings themselves. It also reviews the foremost current trends in the development of this discipline in general and of its resources in particular (mainly mobile applications or apps) and the main concerns and objections posed to it in the wider scenario of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning).
All in all, this monograph on MALL reveals that, under some particular conditions, it  can be as effective as (or even more effective than) other learning or teaching methods and techniques, both in (A) distance or autonomous learning; and (B) formal and blended learning. It also shows some of the current shadows of this field (chiefly, the low level of oral interaction and/or communication of its solutions), which are to be cleared in possible future works.
